Academic Coordinator, Environmental Education & Outreach Program, Urban Resources Initiative (URI)

Work Type - Full time, exempt 40 hrs/wk

Position Description:

The Parks & People Foundation’s Urban Resources Initiative (URI) has an immediate need for an Academic Coordinator for its Environmental Education and Outreach Program (EEOP). The URI-EEOP focuses on building public awareness of the Baltimore ecosystem and watershed ecology, community forestry and restoration, conservation, and other environmental stewardship projects. The Academic Coordinator for EEOP is responsible for developing curriculum, scheduling community and school-based environmental education and stewardship programs, and implementing after school and summer camp enrichment activities.

The Academic Coordinator works independently under the general supervision of the URI Assistant Director to promote and oversee educational outreach and environmental education programs, research and write grant proposals, develop middle and high school curriculum, direct community and school-based educational outreach, assist with the organization of special projects and meetings with Parks & People Foundation (PPF) partners, and implement the environmental education components of  PPF initiatives projects. This position also supervises part-time environmental education instructors and summer camp staff, and teaches classes and conducts workshops.

Job Requirements:

A well-qualified candidate will have experience coordinating school-based and outdoor environmental education programs, developing curriculum and writing successful grants. In addition, supervisory experience, ability to interact with city/community leaders and educators, and considerable knowledge of personal communications and group dynamics is preferred. Other requirements include strong interpersonal skills, strong administrative and organizational skills, BS/BA degree, professional teaching experience (K-8 teaching certification desirable) or the equivalent experience in environmental sciences, education, communications/marketing or related field(s), effective oral and written communication skills, good internet and computer skills.

A superior candidate must have knowledge of current environmental and pedagogical issues (especially those related to science education), curriculum development, and water, urban forests, air, ground and storm-water pollution. Other desired qualifications include the ability to coordinate informational programs; deliver effective oral presentations to educators, students, business leaders, citizens and other constituents; and establish and maintain working relationships with other employees, governmental agencies, civic and educational groups, and the general public.

Additional Requirements:

Ability to work flexible hours for the occasional special event night, and weekend.
