Janie
Gordon
Baltimore
Ecosystem Study Education Coordinator
Janie Gordon joined the BES staff as Education Coordinator in March 2003 and happily became a part of the Parks & People community. Her mission is to enrich opportunities for Baltimore youth to actively learn about urban ecology in classroom and community settings. Working with teachers, educational leaders, BES scientists, Parks & People staff and environmental and outdoor educators has been an important part of her work.
Janie has worked closely with KidsGrow, Parks & People’s signature after school program, providing an inquiry based and scientific enrichment emphasis to the program. She has represented BES in a partnership with Parks & People and the Living Classrooms Foundation in the School Y.A.R.D. program. Schools in Watershed 263 are also a priority for her outreach activities. She is also working with several teachers and BES scientists to bring “BES science” into the classroom.
Janie received her Sc.M degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1978. Prior to joining BES, she directed educational programs for two international unions, and the Maryland State Departments of Health and Environment. She was an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School Of Medicine where her responsibilities included research, teaching, and coordinating the Occupational and Environmental Health portion of the Medical School curriculum. She also directed the Baltimore EnvironMentors Project, a program pairing Baltimore City public high school students with adult mentors with expertise in an environmental science discipline.
On a personal note, Janie, who has a husband, two daughters aged 11 & 14 and one large unruly dog, lives in a 100-year-old Baltimore City house in the heart of the Herring Run watershed. She spends her “free time” enjoying good books, hikes, sports events and movies.
