Community Arts

Parks & People Foundation’s Community Arts program strives to integrate the arts into Parks & People’s projects and programs by promoting cooperation between community leaders and activists, leaders of arts-oriented non-profits, and public agencies. The goal of the program is to encourage self-expression and stewardship through the visual, media, and performing arts.

Projects fostered in our Community Arts program have an extremely positive impact on the restoration, beautification, and appreciation of Baltimore’s urban natural resources.

In 2008, Community Arts worked with Current Gallery and Art Space on “Welcome to: ONE PARK,” an exhibition featured in the Baltimore Festival of Maps.  This exhibition illustrated Parks & People and partners’ vision for Baltimore as a “city within a park” through wall-sized maps, portraits of local gardeners and their gardens, and environmental artwork. The program was also involved in the planning of the seventh annual Art on the Gwynns Falls Trail. Committed to exposing Baltimore youth to the arts, Parks & People and its collaborators were able to provide free tours and activities for students at Gwynns Falls Leakin Park, where artwork was exhibited.

In addition, Community Arts has funded three separate community-based public art events through Parks & People grant programs. More great projects are on the horizon.
