The program's goals are to give college students hands-on experience teaching and opportunities to be mentored by experienced educators, with the ultimate goal of recruiting them to teach in Baltimore City School System. Since 2001 our program has provided internships for over 200 students from 33 colleges and universities from around the country.

I'm not sure if I can do this. What are important qualities to have in order to be successful?

Most importantly, you do not need to have prior teaching experience! In fact, many of our interns are not even education majors. You just must have the desire to use your summer to profoundly impact that lives of some of Baltimore City’s neediest children. We do require that interns have at least a 2.5 GPA and we believe it is important to have the following qualities:

- Strong leadership ability

- Outstanding interpersonal skills

- Positive, patient, persistent and flexible attitude

- Genuine desire to help children

I don't have much experience teaching. What training and support would I receive?

SuperKids Camp interns receive one week of intensive pre-camp training. During this week interns are provided with in-depth training on our curriculum, classroom management and set-up, working with students from diverse backgrounds and behavior management. Once you are placed with your 10 students you will be mentored on-site by an experienced teacher throughout your internship. These reading mentors are there to support and assist you with the ups and down which are typical to new teachers. You will also have the support of your fellow interns whom can empathize with you on this exciting journey!

What have other interns thought of this experience?

Below is some of the feedback we have received about the program from former interns:

“After my summer in Baltimore, I became much more determined to make an effective difference in the education of young people in critical need. In fact, I am currently in a Master’s degree program at Stanford University working toward a degree in the Social Sciences in Education. Much of my degree is focusing on urban education, Civil Rights, and the history of education in general. My desire to get this degree is a direct correlate of my summer with the SuperKids Camp.”

“Working as an actual teacher in a classroom gives you confidence for pursuing similar challenges in the future.”

“The SuperKids camp, although relatively short, was by far the most meaningful experience of my summer. And undoubtedly the most meaningful thing I have undertaken in recent years. As a result, I am currently teaching children. SuperKids did an excellent job of displaying the urgent needs of students in Baltimore City schools; it is both moving and challenging, but this is what makes SuperKids such a good program—its ability to motivate its workers to go beyond their duties.”

“The program was ten times better than expected. I met so many philanthropists and influential people. I had a lot of say in the planning of my lessons, which was surprisingly unexpected.”

“If there is someone who isn’t sure, like I was, the program will definitely have the effect of swaying their decision towards teaching.”
