The Sally J. Michel Legacy Fund

In honor of Sally J. Michel’s extraordinary 28-year tenure as the Chairman of the Parks & People Foundation, which she founded, the organization’s Board of Directors has established the Sally J. Michel Legacy fund, to safeguard the achievement of this remarkable woman who has committed her life to helping Baltimore City and the people who live, work and play here.

“I am so grateful for and proud of the staff, Board and volunteers who have become my family, my closest friends on this wonderful adventure” – Sally Michel.

Fund Purpose

The Sally J. Michel Legacy Fund will provide bedrock financial support for the youth programs that Sally governed at Parks & People -- programs that give thousands of inner-city Baltimore children opportunities to improve their academic skills, broaden their minds through cultural enrichment programs, develop character and physical fitness through sports, and experience the wonders of the natural world through environmental adventures.  These programs include, but are not limited to:

  • SuperKids Camp – an award-winning academic enrichment camp for Baltimore City 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders featuring visits to, and partnerships with, leading cultural institutions.
  • Sports Programs – annually engage approximately 1,200 young people in lacrosse, volleyball, soccer, and baseball leagues, supported by a personal development curriculum.
  • Environmental Education Programs –provide hands-on, developmentally appropriate activities to build critical thinking, problem solving, and ecological stewardship skills.

Fund Stewardship
The Sally J. Michel Legacy Fund was established as a restricted fund, with the corpus retained permanently for investment -- only the interest earnings will be available to expend in the pursuit of the following program objectives:

  • Improving attendance, academic performance, and reduced summer learning loss;
  • Increasing recreational opportunities and improving physical fitness, discipline, leadership and teamwork;
  • Introducing citizens to nature and ecology, fostering lifelong enjoyment and environmental stewardship;
  • Involving youth and adults in nature-focused community service activities, including park improvement projects, vacant lot restorations, tree plantings and stream clean-ups;
  • Developing replicable models for effective youth programs.

“If you have ever been ‘influenced’ by Sally to serve on a committee, organize an event, read to children, stuff envelopes, plant a tree or give money, you know she has committed her life to uplifting Baltimore and its citizens. Sally is one of a kind and we are all better off because of her” -- Jackie Carrera, Parks & People’s President & CEO.
