Parks & People’s Community events grow neighbors into environmental stewards
Wonder-full Backyards Seed Swap
On Saturday, March 7, 2026, our Wonder-full Backyards Seed Swap took place at Parks & People. If you were on our campus, you probably felt it — that little spark that happens when neighbors, youth, and curious minds come together to grow something wonderful. Our Backyards Seed Swap turned into exactly the kind of day we love around here: hands in soil and community gathered for a greener, healthier Baltimore.
We welcomed families, longtime gardeners, brand‑new growers, and plenty of people who just wandered over because they felt the energy. And of course, our Branches students were right there in the mix, sharing what they’ve learned and showing everyone what youth environmental leadership looks like in real time.
The seed tables and workshops stayed busy all afternoon — folks swapping everything from heirloom tomatoes to native wildflowers. But the real magic wasn’t in the seeds themselves. It was in the conversations: neighbors comparing growing styles, sharing backyard victories, and passing along the kind of hard-earned tips you can only get from someone who’s tried it three different ways.
We opened the newly renovated Parks and People garden to the community. Visitors planted, explored, and made plans for the growing season. That’s what we love: a garden that feels less like a campus feature and more like a shared backyard for the city.
Partners That Help Baltimore Grow

Why Days Like These Matter for Community Stewardship
At Parks & People, we believe everyday actions can transform neighborhoods. A handful of seeds. A conversation with a neighbor. Children discovering something new in the dirt (we had someone discover a deer antler on campus!). These are small moments, sure — but string them together, and you get a greener, healthier, more connected Baltimore. Our mission is to spark wonder through play, education, and nature, creating a community of environmental stewards for a healthier Baltimore.
This event was a reminder of what happens when people come together with shared curiosity and a little bit of hope. Wonder grows. Community grows. And before you know it, backyards — and whole blocks — start looking a little more vibrant and alive.
Thanks to everyone who spent the day with us. We can’t wait to see what you grow next.
