The Sacred Space at Matriarch Park

Neighborhood: Harlem Park

Community-designed greenspace on previously vacant lots beside the Highway to Nowhere

The Sacred Place at Matriarch Park is a new community-designed greenspace in West Baltimore, created through a partnership between Parity Homes, Parks & People, and Nature Sacred. Transforming six formerly vacant lots beside the Highway to Nowhere, the park reflects residents’ vision for a welcoming place to gather, connect across generations, and enjoy nature, with features including seating, new trees, natural play elements, and a pollinator garden. Rooted in community input and inspired by the theme of honoring ancestors, the Sacred Place serves as a lasting space for reflection, belonging, and neighborhood connection.

  • hosted two steering committee meetings with project partners, Nature Sacred, EnviroCollab, and Parity Homes,

  • hosted two community workshop meetings in partnership with EnviroCollab to help the community narrow down design concepts and park elements,

  • and coordinated construction with Live Green Landscape Associates.
