The Sacred Place at Matriarch Park Takes Root in Harlem Park, West Baltimore

On October 30, community members, partners, and local leaders gathered to celebrate the dedication of the Sacred Place at Matriarch Park, a new community-designed greenspace in West Baltimore created on six formerly vacant lots beside the Highway to Nowhere. Developed through a partnership between Parity Homes, Parks & People, Nature Sacred, and community design partners, the project transformed underutilized land into a welcoming place for reflection, recreation, and connection.

The Sacred Place was shaped by residents through outreach, listening sessions, workshops, and community design charrettes, where neighbors shared their vision for a space that would bring people together across generations. Inspired by the theme of honoring ancestors, the finished park features seating, natural gathering areas, pollinator-friendly landscaping, and Nature Sacred’s signature bench and Little Yellow Journal. Today, it stands as a lasting example of community-driven design and the power of investing in green spaces that support wellness, belonging, and neighborhood pride.
