Why are city green spaces important?

100 Million

Nearly 100 million people in the U.S. do not live within a walkable distance of at least one local park or other recreation amenity.

Transforming Baltimore’s Communties

In Baltimore City, many communities in East and West Baltimore have no access to healthy green spaces.

Parks & People’s mission is simple:

to improve Baltimore through green space and education. We develop parks & green space to revitalize Baltimore City and host youth programming to guide the next generation of green leaders.

Parks transform people.

The act of reclaiming a vacant lot or beautifying a neglected open space, even by a few residents on a single block, can serve as a catalyst for positive change and growth throughout a community.

Our city’s youth inherit the future.

Every year, Parks & People makes it possible for over 1,000 city 1st – 12th graders to be engaged in meaningful programs emphasizing physical activity, environmental education, college and career readiness and character development.

We don’t want to ask you to come out and find less than ideal conditions; we want you to come out and see that Baltimore has state-of-the art parks and trails, and then that leads to more people coming out, and then it’ll take care of itself.
— Frank Lance, President & CEO, Parks & People
I still remember the parks I grew up in.
— Gabriel Carter, Communications Manager, Parks & People
Access to parks and green spaces impacts our lives well beyond the moment outside. With an active outdoor life comes more confidence, resilience, adaptability, community, determination and purpose—benefits that enrich us as human beings and as a society.
